Towson University Fisher College of Science and Mathematics invites applications for a full time, 12 month, R2 Instrument Support Specialist Materials Research, to oversee the operation and maintenance of Materials Research Instrumentation. Applicants should have extensive experience working with advanced scientific instruments and the ability to learn additional instrumentation. Core instrumentation at TU includes: XRD, XRF, VSM, PPMS, SEM, AFM, Pulsed Laser Deposition System, and Thin Film and Device Fabrication instruments. These instruments serve a diverse group of faculty and students in the areas of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Material Science. The Instrument Support Specialist will be responsible for assisting faculty with the operation, oversight and routine maintenance of instruments, development of new analytical methods, laboratory safety & QA/QC protocols, and supervision and training of facility users.
Responsibilities and Duties The R2 Instrument Support Specialist Materials Research is responsible for Operations, scheduling, troubleshooting, routine and preventative maintenance, sample preparation for instruments such as XRD, XRF, VSM, PPMS, SEM, AFM, and Thin Film and Device Fabrication instruments. Train students, faculty, and collaborators to prepare samples and standards, and operate core instrumentation. Participate in the development of new analytical methods and QA/QC assurance protocols for the core instrumentation. Provide technical support for materials research and contractual work. Build experience/expertise with additional instrumentation over time. The Instrument Support Specialist will function as an FCSM staff member. The chairperson of the Department of Physics, Astronomy & Geosciences will serve as the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
Bachelor's degree.
Three years of experience.
The Instrument Support Specialist will be a scientist with demonstrable technical skills and excellent work habits.
Candidates should be able to work equally well either in a team setting or on their own.
Excellent communication skills are necessary in order to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students and to provide instrument training.
Preferred:
Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or a related scientific discipline.
Extensive experience working with advanced scientific instruments and the ability to learn additional instrumentation.
