The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department and Center for Artificial Intelligence at Wake Forest University School of Medicine will offer several summer research opportunities in 2024 focusing on Imaging & Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT) and Culturally Augmented Learning In Biomedical Informatics Research (CALIBIR).

Our 10-week internship program from May 27th – August 2nd, 2024 offers research opportunities focused on Imaging and Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT), Culturally Augmented Learning In Biomedical Informatics Research (CALIBIR), and many other topics such as:
Injury prediction modeling
Finite element modeling applied to trauma
Military, sports, and spaceflight safety
Osteoporosis prevention
Biomechanical injury mechanisms
Diagnostics and therapies for cancer patients
Medical device testing and prototyping
Biomedical informatics and data science
Imaging and artificial intelligence
Development and use of machine learning based algorithms
Academic Learning Health Care Systems
This intensive summer research experience provides mentoring and research experiences focusing on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics research. We are committed to providing research opportunities to all students, with a special interest in applications from students typically underrepresented within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. First-generation college attendees and those attending colleges with limited research opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are also encouraged to apply. Additional program benefits include: 1-on-1 mentoring, exclusive workshops, research boot camps, & seminars. $5,500 internship pay (pre-tax), on campus apartment-style housing for non-local students, provided shuttle transportation, food/travel allowance, and multiple social events hosted throughout the summer.
Eligibility requirements:
Minimum age: 18 years old (by May 27th, 2024)
Completed at least 2 semesters of undergraduate education (by May 27th, 2024)
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or international students currently attending an U.S. academic institution under a J-1 or F-1 visa are eligible.
Note: There are a limited number of spots for international students due to grant eligibility
The main criteria for the selection of summer scholars will be personal scholarship and academic excellence and the match of applicant interests with those of participating researchers. In addition to the completed online application and 1-page personal statements, please submit the following documentation: A complete transcript of your undergraduate study to date, and one letter of recommendation; this may be requested from any of the following: working professional, academic professor(s), an advisor, and/or department chair. Personal references (including family members) are NOT accepted.

The Biomedical Engineering Department and Center for Artificial Intelligence at Wake Forest University School of Medicine will offer several summer research opportunities in 2024 to undergraduate and master's students. A broad array of biomedical engineering and informatics projects are offered. Students selected for this program will receive a stipend and on-campus housing. The research internship program will be offered between May 27 to August 2, 2024.
